Michael Kimmel is a SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Gender Studies and the founding director of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University. The great-grandnephew of the founder of the Ideal Toy Corporation and author of Playmakers and Guyland, Kimmel brings together personal history and cultural scholarship to explore the stories behind the toys that shaped generations of American childhoods.
In this engaging talk, Kimmel shares the remarkable story of the first-generation Jewish American entrepreneurs who built the modern toy industry. Beginning with Morris and Rose Michtom's invention of the Teddy Bear, Playmakers traces the rise of Jewish-founded companies such as Ideal, Hasbro, Mattel, and Lionel, whose creators introduced enduring icons like Barbie, G.I. Joe, Superman, and Mr. Potato Head. Blending history, memoir, and social insight, Kimmel reveals how immigrant families helped transform toys—and the very idea of childhood—while shaping American culture in lasting ways.
